The Vexmen of Brandywine Robotics

Events

These are the current set of Vexmen events for the 2016-2017 season. Some events are just for IQ, while others are just for VRC High School or VRC middle school. We have a mixed set of events this year over previous years. You can see the full calendar of all Vexmen activities on our Calendar page which is also on the right side of each page.

Optional – St. Joes Prep Event

This was an extremely early event hosted by St. Joes Prep in Philadelphia. It was so early it was opened up to both Middle School and high school teams. The Vexmen sent four teams to compete. Team 91C – Cyclops came in second during preliminary qualifications and ended up leading the Vexmen alliance of 91C, 81K Magik, and 91W Warpath to the tournament finals. 80X Ghostrider also attended the competition and was captain of the seventh seed alliance. It was a good early test for the Vexmen teams and see what the competition looks like this year.

Team 91C Cyclops won the design award and qualified them for PA States. They also qualified 91W and 81K to PA States for being tournament finalists.

Vexmen Downingtown IQ Event

This is the first IQ event of the season to be held at the Marsh creek Sixth Grade center and hosted by the Vexmen. It was extremely successful. Teams from the Vexmen, Upper Perkiomen, Lancaster, and Norristown came to play on a December day. Many robots were able to repeatedly balance the bridge with both of their robots and several were able to do so in programming skills.

The finals came down to two point difference between the top seed alliance of 92W Weapon-X and 10014M from Upper Perk Robotics. They scored two more points than the seventh and eighth seeds 92P Phoenix and 92M Mastermind.

Only one team had a STEM research project at this point, so multiple awards were given to 92P Phoenix. They also won Excellence and Robot Skills. So we expect to see more STEM research projects in the upcoming events.
This year, the rules changed to have a combined skills winner where the autonomous and drivers skills points are added together for an overall skills score. 92P worked at lunch to have their robot park in autonomous and what would have been a sixth place robot skills turned into first. Team 92M also got their robot to park solo on the bridge but could only do in one run. Team 10014F from Upper Perkiomen scored 35 in drivers skills portion leading that side.

Optional – New Foundations Charter HS VRC Event

This was an optional high school only VRC event. Four Vexmen teams – 81K – Magik, 81M – Mercury, 81Y – Cypher, 91C – Cyclops, 91W – Waprpath – traveled to Northeast Philly to play in this early season event. All four teams left with a qualification to PA State Championships. 91C Cyclops won the Excellence Award, the tournament, and the skills competition. 81M Mercury was the fifth seed after qualifications and was 91C’s partner in the first seed alliance. We got to see some new teams from Harriton High School (197A), Sun Valley (9341A), and GW Carver High (45619A). 91C Cyclops won the skills competition with a combined score of 29. Not bad for an early season event.

Parkland HS VRC Event

This was a high school only VRC event. The Vexmen traveled to Allentown to play at Parkland’s high school VRC event. This was their first ever hosted event and it went off very smoothly. We look forward to coming back in years to come.

The Vexmen showed well across the board at Parkland with teams in both alliances in the Championship as well as in other elimination brackets. Team 91C Cyclops had a very good day. They were second in qualifications losing out in a tie breaker by seed points, won the tournamnet with 81D Darwin, and won the skills competition with a combined score of 41. They almost lost in the semifinals against 81M Mercury’s alliance but the third match ended in a tie.

Several Vexmen teams are now hanging with 81M Mercury doing it consistently each match, and 81D doing it nearly every match. 81H Havok, and 81P Pyro also showed they could hang, but also showed you can also fall from the post. Several teams turtled on their back throughout the day as weight distribution and accelerating robots made them fall over.
