2013 – 2014 Vexmen Primary Events

11/30/13: Sarah Heinz House, Pittsburgh, PA
Three Vexmen teams went across state to Pittsburgh to play at Sarah Heinz field. Team 90C – Cyclops – won the Design Award and were tournament runners up, team 80X – X-23 – won the Judges Award in their first tournament ever, and Team 81W – Wolverine – also went out and played at this event across the state was picked by the first ranked alliance selection and was fourth ranked team going into the playoff selection.

Team 81W was defeated by Team 90C in the tournament semi-finals. Team 90C – Cyclops – has now qualified for PA States. Since 90C double qualified, and team 889A from Pittsburgh won the Excellence and Tournament Champions, that puts two qualification slots into the skills buckets for PA States.

Team 90C – Cyclops – also posted the highest programming skills score in PA currently with 23 points and 70th in the world.

X23’s bot worked well throughout the day, with only one glitch in programming that shut them down for one round, giving them their first loss. It almost caused a second loss, but the referee helped them fix it before he started their next round. Their autonomous programming worked great and helped them win a few matches. X23 ended up 4 and 3.

Team 81W did well in the qualification rounds with their six bar linkage working well with their arm scoring consistently throughout the day.

3/1/14 - 9AM - 4PM - PA State Championships, Haverford PA
State Championships is an “earn your way in” championship. The top spots from the each of the events within the state qualify teams to states along with the top skills scores in the state.

This year we have a new world championship qualifying format. All of PA’s 10 world slots will come from the state championships event. Top 6 teams, Excellence Award, Design Award, Programming Skills, and Drivers Skills get a chance to go to worlds in Anaheim, CA. The number of teams coming form Pennsylvania get smaller and smaller each year as Vex grows exponentially each year.

We qualified two robots to move on to World Championships – teams 90C and 81W. They won programming skills against high schoolers! Without any guaranteed spots for middle schoolers, they persevered and won the top score in the state, even though it was not their overall best score in practice. Team 81W won the design award and that qualifies them for worlds as well!

Our club won more judged awards at PA States than any other club. Team 81M and 80Y won awards giving the Vexmen five judged awards overall. This helps show the quality of our robots and the education the kids are getting from robotics.

4/23/14-4/26/14 - Vex Robotics World Championships, Anaheim, CA
The VEX Robotics World Championship brings together top robotics teams to celebrate their accomplishments and compete with and against the best teams from around the world. The 2014 VEX Robotics World Championship will include top teams from over 400 VEX Robotics Competition tournaments happening in cities around the world from June 2013 to March 2014.

Two Vexmen teams – 90C Cyclops, and 81W Wolverine – traveled to Anaheim, California to the Vex World Championships in April. Team 90C came home with a Think Award from the Middle School division! The Think Award honors exceptional, advanced autonomous programming skills. They were third in the Middle School Programming Skills challenge and thirteenth overall among all Middle School, High School, and College teams.

Cyclops advanced to the World Championship event after winning the Programming Skills Challenge at the Vex Pennsylvania State Championships against both High School and Middle School teams from across the state. Wolverine earned their way to the Vex World Championships by winning the Design Award at the Vex Pennsylvania State Championships in March.

Team 90C Cyclops comprises four eighth-grade students, mostly from Lionville Middle School in Downingtown, PA. This team finished the competition in 25th place in their division and third in the Middle School Programming Skills challenge.
